Web Glossary

Confused by the terminology? We'll try and explain web jargon in plain English.

A

Absolute Link

A Web page link that specifies: transfer protocol, domain name, and often a file name. Example:

<a href="http://www.yoursite.co.uk">home page</a>

Web sites are also constructed using the alternative form of link, which is the Relative Link - example:

<a href="pagename.html">content</a>

Relative links work on the principle that fewer instructions are necessary once a visitor has reached the site and there is no need for a full Web address to facilitate internal navigation.

Accessibility

A general term to describe the practice of making Web sites usable by visitors with certain disabilities, including poor vision or blindness, principally by the use of a logical navigation structure and the addition of text alternatives for photographs and illustrations, including images used to represent instructions, information or navigational features.

Because of the multimedia and presentational nature of the Web combined, on occasion, with poor Web site design, many Internet users cannot access the full range of resources available. Also see "Disability Discrimination Act" and "W3C Compliance".

AdSense

Google's contextual advertising network. Web site publishers may sign-up to have supposedly relevant pay-per-click advertisements appear automatically on their pages in return for a share of the revenue collected by Google.
