Google’s ‘results-as-you-type’ logo goes live

Just a very quick post to highlight today’s Google logo (see video below from TechCrunch) which turns a colourless Google logo into a coloured one as you type into the search box. This is surely a huge nod to the ‘results-as-you-type’ feature that everyone expects will be announced later today. Not quite as fun as yesterday’s logo but still fun to play with.

Results-as-you-type

If you’ve not seen this feature in action take a look at the video below from Rob Ousbey. It can look a little busy and confusing at first but I suppose it’s something we’ll get used to over time. Think of it as an extension of the ‘suggest’ functionality that’s been in place for a while now, people managed to get used to that very quickly and it’s probably saving quite a bit of time when you think about it.

What does this mean for SEO?

Some of you may be thinking:

“Is this the end of SEO? How can I know where I rank if the results change with every letter I type?”

Well I don’t think it’ll fundamentally change the way SEO works, or even the way we measure campaigns. A lot of agencies – including us – have already moved away from using rankings solely as the measure of success. We also consider traffic levels, usage stats and conversions/sales.

Rankings can still be measured using professional rank checkers and these will still be relevant. Remember, results-as-you-type will only be active on the Google results page, not the homepage (where ‘suggest’ will still be active).

I do seem to have lost some of my regular site visitors. I presume the suggestions offered are taking them somewhere else.

By the same token, I’m getting masses of random hits and a whole new set of feedback from folk who find the site by chance.

Hardly makes for a business plan but it has added a sense of fun to developing the site. Are they drumming up trade for GOOGLE Analytics?
